If you are upgrading your boots, choosing the right plate and wheels to complete the set up is a big decision.

Certain things to take into consideration when thinking about which plate to buy would be:

  • What type of skating are you doing?
  • What is your budget?
  • What angle of king pin are you looking for?

We will focus on Powerdyne plates since that is what we offer.  Many dance skaters prefer a short mount for increased maneuverability, and many recreational skaters prefer a longer mount to increase stability.  All of the options we will cover are high quality metal plates.  Many beginner skate set ups come with plastic or nylon plates.  If you are upgrading from your beginner skates, a new boot and plate will be a game changer!

Powerdyne Reactor Neo: $219 (as of 1/2024)

Powerdyne Reactor Neo Plate

These are the only plates that have the same plate number as US boot size. This makes choosing a standard mount easy - pick the same number! All the Reactor plates have the Allen key nut for toe stops. Reactor Neo is built from lightweight, extruded, aircraft aluminum that offers durability and rigidity. The Reactor Neo has been stress-tested and refined to reduce weight, increase strength, and improve feel. The Reactor Neo has a bright silver anodized finish and comes with solid 7075 aluminum kingpins and high-rebound, urethane cushions for the instant response found in plates that are twice the price. The Reactor Neo features a Click Action Kingpin Adjustment Nut that allows for precise adjustment and reliability. Lighter and more powerful than any other plate in its class, the Reactor Neo has no equal.

Powerdyne Reactor Pro: $325 (as of 1/2024)

The PowerDyne Reactor Pro Series is the next step in the evolution of the popular Reactor plate. The 10-degree kingpin angle of the PowerDyne Reactor Pro Series offers explosive power—providing superior push and acceleration at the end of every stride—while the high-rebound, urethane cushions make the Reactor responsive, agile, and stable. The plate is constructed from extruded aircraft-grade aluminum in an ultra-lightweight design for levels of strength and weight reduction not found anywhere else in its class. Because performance cannot be compromised at all, only the finest parts are used to complete the Reactor, including aluminum trucks with steel rod-reinforced pivot arms, solid aluminum black anodized kingpins, and durable Delrin pivot cups. The plate is finished in a durable matte storm gray color with laser-etched graphics. When all is said and done, the Reactor Pro represents the pinnacle of plate design, beauty, and performance!

Powerdyne Arius: $399 (as of 1/2024)

Powerdyne Arius

The PowerDyne Arius Platinum takes the roller skate plate to the next level.  The Arius Platinum features the same revolutionary design as the original Arius with upgrades in key areas that improve performance and ease-of-use. To start, the toe stop bolt is now found at the very front of the Arius Platinum, instead of behind the toe stop. This provides greater clamping power for secure stops, starts and other toe stop maneuvers. The trucks of the Arius Platinum also receive a significant update, with a “winged” truck body that securely holds the Split Butterfly Cushions in place with no need for any other stabilization or adjustment hardware. Finished in a brilliant platinum gold color, the Arius Platinum is lighter, stronger, more stable, more powerful, more maneuverable, more durable and more efficient than any other plate available today. Each Arius Platinum set comes with 4 sets of Split Butterfly Cushions so you can tailor your ride for your exact needs.

The angle of the kingpin is important because it is responsible for the feel of your skate.  A 10 or 15 degree kingpin will give a traditional feel with good stability and fast acceleration. A kingpin angle of 45 degrees such as the Arius gives more maneuverability & response but it is less stable and offers little suspension.

Other plates worth checking out would be Roll Line & Suregrip. There are a lot of options out there.  The nice benefit of ordering a Powerdyne plate with your new Riedell skates is that the plate will come mounted from the manufacturer & will be ready to roll!
